Game for MACC Jokes? (Star Metro North)

LIVE comedy enthusiasts in Penang are in for a treat as the Malaysian Association of Chinese Comedians (MACC) is coming to town for their first show outside the Klang Valley.

The group, comprising Douglas Lim — noted for his role as Steven in the local sitcom Kopitiam — and comedians Kuah Jenhan and Phoon Chi Ho, will take the stage at Dewan Sri Pinang on March 5.

Gavin Khoo, the executive director of GFW which is presenting the event, said the trio would be performing a parody of the hit Hong Kong crime thriller Infernal Affairs.

He said MACC: Internal Affairs would be the group’s third show after it was introduced at the PJ Live Arts Theatre last August.

“Tickets for the show were all sold out two weeks before its opening which prompted immediate requests for a re-staging,” he said.

Khoo said the group had chosen Penang for their first ‘away show’ as some Penangites had already taken notice of MACC through videos of their comedy that had been uploaded on the Internet.

“The conditions in Penang are ripe for stand-up comedy.

“We also feel that it is crucial to carry Kuala Lumpur’s comedy buzz beyond the capital’s boundaries to inspire locals to do more comedy,” he said.

Khoo added that comedy could bring Malaysians closer, defuse the tensions related to ‘sensitive issues’ and reinforce the 1Malaysia concept by helping to set aside the people’s differences in the name of laughter.

Tickets for MACC: Internal Affairs are priced at RM35 and RM50 and can be obtained from Red Rock Hotel on Macalister Road. For details, call 012-3255965.
